Protect Employees from Covid-19 with IAQ Attention

As an HVAC contractor, an increased point of conversation is Indoor Air Quality or IAQ. What most people dont realize is that IAQ is described by the EPA as the air quality within and around buildings and structures as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. The EPA states that understanding and controlling common pollutants indoors can help reduce your risk of indoor health concerns. This means that improving the IAQ of a building could lessen the risk of the occupants from getting sick.

So, how does IAQ relate to the Coronavirus? The goal of an HVAC system is to circulate heated or cooled air. This means that when someone coughs or sneezes due to illness, the air containing the illness could be redistributed throughout the building through the HVAC system if it is not caught by the filter. I know that sounds horrifying, But listen, adding UV light to your HVAC system to disinfect the air.

So what is it? UV lights are added in the HVAC system to eradicate chemicals, mild, odors, viruses, tobacco smoke, and other harmful bacterias. The goal of UV light is to clean the air from particles that a filter cant catch. There are many brands that have come out with UV Systems. One brand that I recently was introduced to was Steril-air.

The next question is cost… Is this cool product going to burn a hole in my pocketbook? The short answer is no! Once installed, there is minimal upkeep and having the system in place has both energy and cost-saving benefits.
